The Yellow Jacket Nutrition Center, conveniently located in the BHSU weight room, will provide meals for athletes in all sporting programs.

SPEARFISH, S.D. — Athletes at Black Hills State University will have even more help recovering from games and workouts thanks to their very own nutrition center.

The Yellow Jacket Nutrition Center, conveniently located in the BHSU weight room, will provide meals for athletes in all sporting programs.

BHSU weight training staff, who are constantly balancing workouts and meals say that the new nutrition center can even aid in helping them get on better diets which may help reduce the number of injuries.

“If they need weight gain, we can focus on gaining weight, if we need to maintain, we can maintain and then with recovery, it comes down to soft tissues, so eliminating soft tissue injuries,” said Kellan Anderson, the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator with Black Hills State University. “If we’re hydrating and providing them with the right amount of calories, the right amount of food, you know what I mean, hopefully we can mitigate a lot of those things too.”

The project cost roughly $10,000, which was covered by Stadium Sports Grill in Spearfish while 400 dollars a week worth of food will be provided by Lueders Food Center.

“I mean, this is the first step in, you know, building those community relations and getting more people in the community invested in us, the community and region,” said Thayer Trenhaile, the Assistant Athletic Director  First big step because athletic performance and diets, that’s the biggest piece.

Fall sports athletes who start their camps in a few weeks will be some of the first to take advantage of the new nutrition center.
