The Rotary Club of Shallotte’s Las Vegas Night event has been replaced by a car raffle

| Wilmington StarNews

WILMINGTON — As a project of the Environmental-Conservation Community Service Program of the Wilmington Woman’s Club, the club members collected their extra pocket change over several months to purchase three live oak trees for Oakdale Cemetery.

During Hurricane Florence two years ago, the cemetery experienced severe damage to hundreds of trees and flowers beds. With the project spearheaded by Fay Hall, the CSP chairman, the trees were purchased locally, delivered to the cemetery, and planted in areas where other trees had previously stood.

To show their continued support of planting more trees in the community, the Wilmington Woman’s Club has joined other nonprofits and businesses in becoming a member of the Wilmington Tree Initiative.

For information about the Wilmington Woman’s Club, contact Dorothy Hollis at 910-799-0318 or cwhollis@msn.com or Sandy Cyphers at 910-367-3295 or scyphers@ec.rr.com.

Rotary Club of Shallotte replaces 2021 Las Vegas Night with car raffle

SHALLOTTE — The Rotary Club of Shallotte’s annual Las Vegas Night each January might be the most-fun night of the year in the area, and the club has raised nearly $1 million for community groups over the past 15 years.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced cancellation of the event for 2021, but the club has replaced it with a car raffle with a January drawing that will award a 2020 Chevrolet Spark.

Raffle tickets will be available from members of the Rotary Club of Shallotte at a cost of $25 for a single ticket, $50 for three and $100 for eight. There also are significant sponsorship opportunities that include 40 or more tickets.

For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/shallotterotary/ or http://www.shallotterotaryclub.com/. Raffle tickets also will be available online or by calling Pratt at 910-274-4867. For sponsorship inquiries, contact Doug Terhune at 910-755-7557.

Las Vegas Night proceeds are distributed annually to local schools and community groups with an emphasis on underprivileged and underserved youth in Shallotte and Brunswick County.

Cape Fear Sierra Club guest speaker will be Roger Shew,  lecturer in environmental science at UNCW

Cape Fear Sierra Club will meet 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 via Zoom. Program will be on Conservation/Preservation Issues for Natural Areas in Southeastern North Carolina with Roger Shew.

Shew, lecturer in environmental science at UNCW, will discuss the conservation and preservation of unique and valuable ecosystems in southeastern North Carolina, including longleaf pine savannas, salt marshes, and riverine systems. These areas are of critical importance to the economic health of our region as well as to recreational use and community enjoyment. Shew will look at several areas that provide opportunities for positive and healthy outings and some of the important laws that have helped to protect these areas, including the Endangered Species Act. He will also address proposed revisions to some of these laws and possible environmental changes  that may threaten these natural treasures.
