Australia’s health officials have moved to allay fears after an elderly woman died hours after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 82-year-old woman died at an aged care facility in Logan, Queensland, on Wednesday.

She had earlier in the day received a dose of a COVID-19 vaccine but is also reported to have an underlying lung condition.

Police were called to the Springwood Yurana Aged Care Facility and determined the death to be not suspicious, a spokesman said, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Department of Health says it will investigate the incident fully but early indications were that there’s no “causal link” between her passing and her vaccination.

“Sadly more than 1000 people pass in aged care every week. It is inevitable, as the head of the TGA has noted, that this will include people who have been recently vaccinated,” a Department of Health spokesperson said in a statement supplied to 7NEWS.com.au.

“Any event that happens following vaccination is fully investigated.

“The medical experts and the TGA will review the specifics of such cases and reach a conclusion based on the facts.”

The Therapeutic Goods Administration is responsible for approving vaccinations in Australia.

It is also monitoring the safety of vaccines across the globe.

Only the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines have been provisionally approved for use domestically.

It’s currently unconfirmed which the patient was administered with, but there are reports it was the Pfizer vaccine.

“It can be expected that older and more frail people in an aged care setting may pass away due to progression of underlying disease or natural causes, this does not mean the vaccine has contributed to this,” the Health spokesperson said.

“The TGA is monitoring COVID-19 vaccination in elderly patients across the world, and is in regular contact with global regulators.”
