A 72-year-old Palm Bay woman with dementia who was reported missing Friday had a diabetic episode and crashed her car overnight in Hollywood, Palm Bay Police Lt. Mike Smith said.
Palm Bay police issued a Silver Alert for Barbara Mayrhauser, who was last seen about 6 p.m. Friday in Palm Bay driving a black 2004 Hyundai Elantra.
Mayrhauser collided with another car in Hollywood and was transported to a local hospital, Smith said. Her family was notified, and relatives responded to pick her up.
Smith said the Silver Alert case demonstrates that relatives should sometimes take preventative steps and talk with older drivers — especially those with dementia and other deficits — about taking their driver’s licenses.
“Obviously, the government doesn’t know the specifics of everybody’s current mental health status, or physical disabilities. So it’s on the families to stay on top of these things and sometimes make the hard decisions — and try to protect not only their family, but the other folks that are out there driving,” Smith said.
A Hollywood police dispatcher did not have crash details available Saturday morning.
